Are Microbials Safe?

The use of Monera’s MICROCAT® and MICROSAN microbial formulations for bioaugmentation in biological waste treatment is absolutely safe.

Our commercial microbial strains have been reproduced from the parental strains in much the same manner as occurs in nature. They are selected from GRAS (“Generally Regarded as Safe”) strains, as published by U.S. and European governmental sources, or are classified as biosafety Class I (not known to cause disease in healthy humans or animals).

Microbes used in MICROCAT products are saprophytes, using non-living food sources.

Monera’s ISO 9001:2008 quality control program ensures that no disease-producing microbes are present in any of our formulations. We use only naturally occurring (and widely distributed) microbial strains that are not pathogenic to animals or plants. Our strains are selected for their safety and ability to transform compounds found in waste and wastewater as part of the natural process of nutrient recycling.

Likewise, it is extremely unlikely that the microbes contained in MICROCAT formulations will “take over” a biological waste treatment system.

Naturally occurring microorganisms can very rapidly break down many chemicals that are toxic or inhibitory at high concentrations. As this breakdown occurs, the microbes grow, reproduce and die in a dynamic sequence. Once their preferred food source runs out, the growth rate of the microbes slows. The microbes, in turn, become a food source for other microbes present in the system.
